Using Twitter to hunt for upcoming domains
In case you’ve been living in a snow-cave under a polar ice cap, you probably know the Web site Twitter is exploding right now. In fact, It’s the fastest growing property online, with nearly 7 million users, in large part because of it’s micro-blogging features and massively viral nature.
So how can that help domainers?
One of the things I like to invest in are what I call “future domains,” or words that are made up, but have recently entered common usage and are set to explode. These can be a source of type-in traffic, as well as solid investments you can develop or sell in the future.
Some examples…
Twittarati
Mompreneurs
Podcashing
Because of the immediate, casual nature of Twitter, people tend to use language patterns and words that have only recently entered the ether. In a number of cases, Twitter spawns the creativity required to actually invent words on the spot, including the many are derivations of the word Twitter. (Wired’s Jargon Watch is also a good source of future words, however by the time the magazine is published, many have already been taken.)
So get yourself a Twitter account and follow the thought leaders in your industry or vertical market. Keep your domain registrar page open in a Tab when you are Twittering, and see if you can catch some decent domains that have not only traffic, but upside as well.

Smash Masterson
